Powering Progress: Con J. Franke Electric’s Expertise with an East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Project

December 20, 2023

At Con J. Franke Electric, we take pride in our commitment to excellence in electrical work, and one of our most exciting projects showcases our dedication to improving the lives of communities. In this month's project profile, we're thrilled to highlight our involvement in the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Carbonic Acid Storage (CAS) and Dissolution System (DS) project , which is making a significant impact on water quality in three California cities: Orinda, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek.

A Refreshing Approach to Water Treatment

The EBMUD CAS and DS project revolves around installing Liquid Carbon Dioxide Storage Tanks and Vaporization Systems – think of it as a colossal soda fountain – that help these communities maintain the acidity of their water supply. This not only safeguards essential infrastructure but also ensures that residents receive higher-quality and better-tasting water.

A Comprehensive Electrical Endeavor

The scope of our electrical work for this project spans three different water treatment sites, encompassing both new and existing structures, covering a total of over 10 acres. While the CAS and DS components remain consistent at each location, the layout varies to accommodate the unique needs of each site. Con J. Franke provided and installed new electrical distribution equipment, underground duct banks, control panels, and fiber optic systems to support the newly installed Liquid Carbon Dioxide Storage Tanks and Vaporization Systems.

Our involvement in this substantial $15,000,000 project commenced in March 2022 and is slated for completion by the end of March 2024. Spearheading this endeavor is Project Manager Steve Frain, along with Foreman Mike Wolf and Foreman Dave Sokotowski. Our skilled construction team comprises around 50 qualified individuals, including 3 Con J. Franke Electric employees, numerous general contractor personnel, and several plant employees. In 2024, Point One Electrical Systems and Tesco Controls Inc will join us on-site on-site.

Electrical Innovation at Its Best

Con J. Franke Electric is tasked with the installation of various electrical components critical to the success of this water treatment project. This includes panels for chemical control, power, fiber patch, and lighting, as well as the implementation of three 15 kilovolt-amp (kVA) transformers. Additionally, we're overseeing the installation of a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) rack, multiple hydrogen (pH) sensors and transmitters, and several pressure gauges, flow switches, and flow meters.

Lighting the Way for Cleaner Water

Our dedicated team at Con J. Franke Electric is genuinely excited to be part of this transformative project, which aims to provide cleaner, better-quality water to the residents of Orinda, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek. We believe that by contributing our expertise to essential infrastructure projects like these, we're illuminating communities and improving their quality of life.

At Con J. Franke Electric, we're committed to delivering excellence in every project we undertake. The EBMUD CAS and DS project exemplifies our dedication to making a positive impact, one electrical connection at a time.
